Elf Paca Meadows began as a marketing idea for our garden center as we researched Alpacas my husband Lennie and daughter Emily were intrigued by them. They started seriously looking at them after speaking with Nicola Blake from Sallie's Fen Alpacas in Barrington NH at their display at the Rochester Fair. We then scheduled a visit to their farm and others in the area within the Alpaca Package Resource .
After seeing the animals in person Lennie III and Emily decided to go ahead with the purchase of our first three Alpacas. Myself and Lennie IV (our son) were a little hesitant as I felt we might be biting off more than we could chew with already having 3 dogs, 2 kids in travel hockey and a rapidly growing landscape business.
Once the first three arrived ( Donoma, Anise and Blaze) it didn't take long for me and Lennie IV to fall in love with them. Soon after we brought in our fourth Alpaca, Black Beauty and then went out to New York to purchase our fifth Alpaca Jack Frost. We stayed stable at five through out the remainder of the winter as we anxiously anticipated the birth of our first two cria from Donoma and Black Beauty.
The month of May has been a long one as we have closely watched both girls waiting for labor to start. As Memorial Day Weekend approached I had to make a decision to stay with our girls or go to Pennsylvania with the rest of the family for Lennie IV's hockey tournament. Although I love to watch my kids play hockey I just couldn't stand the thought of leaving the girls and missing the births. This coming from the me the most hesitant about the original idea of alpacas!!!
After a few false alarms (thanks for your patience Nicola & Jack) both moms decided to deliver on Friday May 26th. Lennie and both kids were all packed and getting into the Yukon to start out on their journey to Pennsylvania when Black Beauty started pushing. We called Nicola right away but Beauty wasn't waiting. About 4 minutes before Nicola arrived Beauty delivered a beautiful baby girl we have named Bella Sarita of Elf-Paca Meadows. Within in moments of Nicola arriving Donoma started pushing and our second cria was born. Donoma gave birth to a handsome baby boy who we have named Odie's Midnight Magic of Elf-Paca Meadows.
Now here we are seven Alpacas with 3 crias due in the fall of 2007. Since the alpacas have entered our lives we have enjoyed every moment with them. They are very relaxing to spend time with after a long day. We are very excited about upcoming shows and future crias. I am glad I got past my skepticism because I can't imagine not having the alpacas in my life.
We would like to take this time to send out a special thanks to Cynjim Alpacas, Strafford NH; Sallie's Fen Alpacas, Barrington NH; Sea Hill Farm Alpacas; Kittery Point ME, Tamarack Meadow Farm, Barrington NH and Crown Point Alpacas, Strafford NH, Phoenix Rising Alpacas, Ithaca NY. Everyone of these farms has given us advise & moral support when we needed it. We couldn't have done it without you.
